One of the of the Hopi people's ceremonial dances is done for the Butterfly Woman. This important role is never undertaken by a young or inexperienced woman - because the role of Butterfly, whose task is to pollinate the fields so there will be new seeds and a new agricultural cycle, is an act and duty of great power.

The role of Butterfly woman is also, I believe, to pollinate the minds and imaginations of the people - so that there can be a next generation, infused with the wisdom, the pollen of those generations that have gone before them.
